Whether some follicles suffer MPB later on in life and others do not was determined during early development in your mother's womb. Embryologically, these areas may be from a different stem cell population (just as hair along the side in the the back is derived from a  different source than on the crown and therefore is not involved in MPB).  The hair follicles in the thinning areas have more androgen  receptors or more sensitive androgen receptors.  In any case, the way in which the hair follicles are genetically encoded in  regards to the factors responsible for MPB is the major determinant as to whether or not they will respond to treatment.  And,  there is no way in which we can predict that response
